I thought this book was the single most useful book I read during my twin pregnancy. I have not found such a clear, concise and well-organized source of information on such topics as how much weight is necessary and healthy for an expectant MOM (mother of multiples) to gain, what a NICU is, who works there and what they do, premature babies and the problems they might have, EXACTLY what to expect if you have a surgical delivery, and most importantly, the special precautions that expectant MOMs should take throughout their pregnancies.
Reading this book helped me take the best possible care of my unborn babies and myself, not to mention making the most of my prenatal appointments, by educating me in detail on topics that other twin books only brushed across. When complications occurred I was prepared for them, I knew what was going on, and so I didn’t panic. I did develop some potentially serious problems, gestational diabetes for me and IUGR for one of my sons (and no, I didn’t develop diabetes from eating junk food; I have a family history of Type II diabetes). Despite these difficulties, I carried my identical twin sons to 37 weeks, and they weighed 5 pounds 5 ounces and 7 pounds 3 ounces at birth. My doctor later told me that overall, I had one of the healthiest twin pregnancies she had ever seen-normal blood pressure, no anemia, very few preterm contractions, no bed rest, and two healthy babies who were discharged to go home with me. I think the crash course in high-risk obstetrics that I got from reading this book is one of the chief reasons why.
I have read two major criticisms of this book from fellow reviewers. The first is that the tone is unnecessarily frightening. The second criticism was that the book offers advice on diet that is not, shall we say, orthodox.

The Storm of the Century: Tragedy, Heroism, Survival, and the Epic True Story of America’s Deadliest Natural Disaster: The Great Gulf Hurricane of 1900 ridged
Author: Al Roker ID: B00XOIZKCI

In this gripping narrative history, the beloved NBC weather personality vividly brings to life the Great Gulf Hurricane of 1900: the deadliest natural disaster in American history. On the afternoon of September 8, 1900, 200-mile-per-hour winds and 15-foot waves slammed into Galveston, the prosperous and growing port city on Texas’ Gulf Coast. By dawn the next day, when the storm had passed, the city that had existed just hours before was gone. Shattered, grief-stricken survivors emerged to witness a level of destruction never before seen: 8,000 corpses littered the streets and were buried under the massive wreckage. Rushing water had lifted buildings from their foundations, smashing them into pieces, while intense winds had upended girders and trestles, driving them through house walls and into sidewalks. In less than 24 hours, one storm destroyed a major American metropolis – and awakened a nation to the terrifying power of nature. The Storm of the Century brings this legendary disaster and its aftermath into brilliant focus. No other natural disaster has ever matched the havoc caused by the awesome mix of winds, rains, and flooding that devastated this bustling metropolis and shocked a young, optimistic nation on the cusp of modernity. Exploring the impact of the disaster on a rising nation’s confidence – the pain and trauma of the loss and the determination of the response – Al Roker illuminates both the energy and the limitations of the American Century, and of nature itself.

“Galveston was sea now: there was no island. The bay had met the gulf, and as the Cline family spun, pitched, and coasted on their collapsing raft, all they saw to suggest a city were the tops of a few remaining buildings, here and there visible in lightning flashes above crashing ocean waves that spread on all sides as far as they could see.” – page 191

Imagine the sheer terror of suddenly being caught up in a Category 4 hurricane that you were not expecting. This is precisely the situation the good people of Galveston, TX found themselves in during the afternoon and evening of September 8, 1900. It would go down as the deadliest natural disaster in American history. Al Roker is known to tens of millions of Americans for his work on NBC’s “Today” and as host of The Weather Channel’s “Wake Up with Al” show. Roker recalls this historic storm in his fabulous new book “The Storm of the Century: The Great Gulf Hurricane of 1900”. Mr. Roker grabbed my attention in the opening pages and simply never let go. I could not put this one down.

In the opening chapter of “The Storm of the Century” Al Roker introduces us to about a dozen residents of Galveston. Over the next 300 pages or so we share the trials and tribulations each would face during those terrifying 12 hours. I found that this approach to relating the story of what actually took place in the city on that fateful night to be extremely effective. Meanwhile, Roker also presents a brief history of the area. Much to my surprise, I discovered that Galveston was very much a "multicultural" city. Roker explains how and why that came to be. Meanwhile, there is also a discussion of the emerging science of meteorology.

This book breaks down why we feel the way we do into basic and fundamental reasons, in an easy to read and follow way. I have found it to be a comfort to read as it seems as though it’s been written JUST for me.

Understanding why I feel the way I do, I’m in a much better position to identify and avoid those things that cause me to feel negativly. Also, the book offers direction on how to handle yourself when you get to a low point. These coping skills are priceless and the simple knowledge that I have a plan makes me feel better.

I would very highly reccomend this book to anyone… not just people suffering from Anxiety, Depression and Addiction… There are some great life lessons in here that, without this book, most of us would have to learn the hard way.

I have returned to this book many times since my first read and will continue to do so. If you’re feeling ready to take control of your life and learn to laugh and smile again, this book will teach you how.

I can’t think of a phrase so frequently used as "I Want to Change My Life". While the usual answer is almost always "Easier said than done!", what’s great about Dr. Melemis’s new book is that it truly provides us with a 360-degrees roadmap with clear and concise directions on how we can do it. Dr. Melemis cleverly combines the mental, spiritual and physical dimensions to how change can be implemented in very practical ways. It’s not a book you’ll read once, but rather one that you’ll keep refering to again and again.

I work in the addiction field, and have been looking for a book that simplifies the issues, and provides an action plan for change. This is it. It covers everything and explains it, too. It is incredible.

Before and after my bariatric surgery I bought a lot of guides. I haven’t reviewed some because I could find nothing good to say about them, but this is one of the best — if not THE best.

The difference, I believe, lies in Dr Duc Vuong’s infectious enthusiasm for good food.

Food is what preoccupies us before bariatric surgery — and it sure as shootin’ is on our minds after bariatric surgery.

The point is to make a new start, and to dump the bad old ways.

This is what Dr Vuong teaches us to do.

As a Vietnamese, and obviously a very gifted home cook as well as a fine surgeon, he is familiar with cooking high-protein meals using the best fish and seafood — and I cannot imagine my post-operation diet without fish and seafood. It really is a key ingredient, full of protein, yet light on the bad stuff.

His overall emphasis on quality fresh food strikes a real chord with me. I believe that many overweight people — well, me for a start — do not think too much about food, but rather, too little, cramming processed junk into our mouths without considering or even tasting what we are devouring.

To appreciate food — and understand what it contains — is the first step on the road to health.

This is not to say that this excellent book contains nothing but recipes, far from it. But the advice on eating is so good, and so important, that I heartily recommend this book for that alone.

At 70lbs down, I have to thank Dr Vuong for writing this.

I have read about half of this book so far and it is excellent. In my research, I have read many books on WLS and this one is really the first that has offered some excellent practical advice for patients. Most of these books are all about the surgery but this book really hits home with life applicable advice on change. I highly recommend it based on what I have read so far!

This book gives you a no nonsense type approach for the Gastric Sleeve. If you follow the book you will heal faster and healthier than any other way. Dr. Vuong knows what he is talking about, and I thank him for that.

This book is by far the best I’ve read on angry and controlling men, and how to deal with them. Controlling and abusive behavior can be quite confusing as well as infuriating, as abusers tend to use a large repertoire of manipulative tactics such as lying, projection, blackmail, denying being angry, and putting on a "Mr. Wonderful" act to the outside world, etc. "Why Does He Do That" is exceptionally well written, carefully explaining among other things: nine types of abusers; tactics abusive men use to manipulate their partners; early warning signs of abusive relationships; myths about abusers (such as the one that alcohol consumption causes abuse); the legal system and mental health professionals; the effect of abuse on boys and girls; how some families and certain aspects of society grooms boys to be future abusers; and how to help abused women. Bancroft even describes what to look for in men’s groups for abusers and how to tell if the abuser is changing for real or is just pretending to change.

Prior to writing this book, Lundy Bancroft had been in the trenches for 15 years as a counselor in an abusive men’s program. As a seasoned veteran of dealing with manipulative abusive individuals, Bancroft does an outstanding job of alerting the reader to their tactics and debunking common B.S. claims they make. His stories about his clients and the clients of colleagues are fascinating and provide poignant lessons for the reader. One woman had been in couple’s counseling for 6 months with her husband and finally revealed that he was abusing her. Appearing on the verge of tears, the husband told the therapist that he had been in denial about his violence and hadn’t been facing how badly it was hurting his wife.
I wondered "why do I CARE why he does it? It’s wrong and I deserve better!" But even though my inner voice told me that, I could never really pinpoint the exact ways my husband mistreated me. He was a good man, and he truly believed he had the right to verbally beat me down the way he did. And I thought maybe he was right. He was more educated than I am, he made more money, his family had money. This book helped me give it a name, showed me that I’m not crazy and indeed have rights. It showed, with clear illustrations about other abusive men, that there are a myriad of tactics they use and anger is not their main issue. Control and being the authority on all subjects is their main objective. Being the one in charge, being the one to look good and feel good is their main goal. All the things he said to me to discredit me, to twist counseling around to fit his picture of what was "really" happening, how everything was perfect between us until I just ripped the rug out from under him and left for no reason… these are all CLASSIC tactics of an abuser, both during the relationship and after she leaves.
My counselor recommended it and finally, after lots of procrastination, I finally got it. And it makes me realize how strong I was to leave, and how lucky I was to get away. The emotional/psychological games, how I had to keep my opinions hidden and my feelings a secret just to be the fantasy girl he insisted that I be, the way he would just disregard my opinion about this and still does… it can make a girl feel so isolated, so bad about herself, and deep down…crazy! But this book showed me that not only am I NOT crazy, but that being imperfect is no reason to allow someone to do that to me. We’re all imperfect, but we still all deserve better than this.
When most women ask "why does he do that," they are searching for an answer that will help them to make an abusive relationship better. This book makes it very clear that the answer to the question has nothing to do with the abusive man’s partner, and everything to do with a sick and destructive need for complete control over another human being.
I have read a number of books about abuse and control, and many of them are very good at deconstructing the dynamic between a controller and his victim. The difference for me is that many of those books have been by women who treat victims. This is a book by a man who has worked with batterers. I am not disparaging the work of women (and men) who work with victims–I was once one of them. What I am saying is that, as I read this, I felt a deep sense of validation, that the "other side" of the story, which many books get at through stories with victims, isn’t something imagined or theorized. Controllers do know what they are doing. They understand that it hurts. They don’t want to change. And I and other victims cannot change them. An outline of the specifics of abusive and controlling men makes it very clear that the "circle of influence" for women does not extend to the abuser. It may sound cliche to say you must save yourself, but after reading the many facets of abuse and the way they surface, a victim will understand will great clarity that her precious energy must be used to care for herself and her children. And pulling back that energy, for me, has been a critical step in surviving.
And for going through the family court system, if that is what a woman chooses to do.

The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11 MP3 CD – Unabridged, October 11, 2006
Author: Visit ‘s Lawrence Wright Page ID: 1400153050

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Wright, a New Yorker writer, brings exhaustive research and delightful prose to one of the best books yet on the history of terrorism. He begins with the observation that, despite an impressive record of terror and assassination, post–WWarII, Islamic militants failed to establish theocracies in any Arab country. Many helped Afghanistan resist the Russian invasion of 1979 before their unemployed warriors stepped up efforts at home. Al-Qaeda, formed in Afghanistan in 1988 and led by Osama bin Laden, pursued a different agenda, blaming America for Islam’s problems. Less wealthy than believed, bin Laden’s talents lay in organization and PR, Wright asserts. Ten years later, bin Laden blew up U.S. embassies in Africa and the destroyer Cole, opening the floodgates of money and recruits. Wright’s step-by-step description of these attacks reveals that planning terror is a sloppy business, leaving a trail of clues that, in the case of 9/11, raised many suspicions among individuals in the FBI, CIA and NSA. Wright shows that 9/11 could have been prevented if those agencies had worked together. As a fugitive, bin Ladin’s days as a terror mastermind may be past, but his success has spawned swarms of imitators. This is an important, gripping and profoundly disheartening book. (Aug.)

From Bookmarks Magazine

The Looming Tower may be the most riveting, informative, and “heart-stopping account” yet of the men who shaped 9/11 (New York Times Book Review). The focus on individuals gives the book its emotional punch, but it is also a narrative bold in conception and historical sweep. Lawrence Wright conducted more than 500 interviews, from bin Laden’s best friend in college to Richard A. Clarke, Saudi royalty, Afghan mujahideen, and reporters for Al Jazeera. The result, while evenhanded in its analysis of the complex motives, ideals, and power plays that led to 9/11, leaves few nefarious details uncovered. An abrupt ending did little to sway critics that Looming Tower is nothing less than “indispensable” reading (Cleveland Plain Dealer).

Lawrence Wright has written an utterly absorbing book that will both captivate and appall you, and not just because of his recounting of the breathtaking horrors that took place on September 11, 2001. Equally appalling is Wright’s depiction of the entrenched bureaucrats at the CIA, FBI and the National Security Agency, who failed to share crucial information with one another because of petty personal differences and agency cultures that value conformity above true investigative ability. Had the CIA, in particular, released information regarding the whereabouts of several individuals who ultimately participated in the 9-11 attacks, those tragedies might well have been prevented.

Reading these things was deeply painful for me, who watched the Trade Towers collapse as I sped across Queens trying to get home to my family in Brooklyn Heights. I can only imagine how distressing this experience might be to those who lost friends and loved ones in the attacks that day. Yet Wright has handled this difficult material in a way that makes it bearable to read, and his pacing of the story is masterful. The Looming Tower reads like a suspense novel at times and the writing is lyrical.

The book is also chock full of pertinent facts and background material that help make sense, insofar as that is even possible, of the motivations of the terrorists. I have never seen logic in the tactics of al Qaeda and similar groups, but this book has helped me understand that logic is not the driving force. Rather it seems to be history, the pursuit of a tribal conception of "honor" and a desire to recreate past glory that is far more important than logic.
In Lawrence Wright’s masterpiece The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11, he effortlessly connects disparate puzzle pieces of our current clash with Islamofascism with a coherent, page-turning narrative that at time reads like a Robert Ludlum suspense novel. He begins with FBI operative Dan Coleman who finds terrifying evidence in 1996 that there is an organization, Al-Qaeda, that is hell-bent on destroying America and spreading Islamofascism throughout the world. His superiors find Coleman’s claims "too bizarre, too primitive and exotic" and fail to take action. In other words, the Western imagination cannot comprehend the Islamofascist mentality. It is Wright’s objective to get inside, to the very core, of Al-Qaeda’s chief figures and show us how they feel humiliated by the successes of the West, including Israel, and how this humiliation, plus a great deal of sexual repression, animates their obsession with becoming "martyrs for Allah." Lawrence Wright achieves his objective masterfully and leaves a terrifying, indelible imprint on the reader. Having read dozens of "9/11" books, I can say this is my favorite. The book succeeds for several reasons. First, it shows the failure of American imagination in dealing with terrorism. Second, Wright’s narratives leading to 9/11 are effortlessly woven with concrete (never academic) psychological profiles of the seeds of Al-Qaeda: We see the fastidious, sexually repressed Egyptian anti-Semite religious scholar Sayyid Qutb as he navigates post World War II America. He is disgusted by our freedom and equality for women and his disgust radicalizes him so that he returns to Egypt to support a radical theocracy movement that thrives to this day.
I saw the author last night at a book signing/lecture, and wrote down some of his main points. I hope it is o.k. with him that I share them here, and what he said, because I found if very fascinating. Mr. Wright is a very intelligent, "gentle" man who obviously cares about things and people, and I found him very likeable, becuase he has a good sense of humor and he did so much research for this book, and travelled extensively. He said he interviewed over 1,000 people in the Arab world for this book.

Some of the main points of what he said:

– The Arabic world is incredibly insular. He said, if you take away oil, the entire Arab world, from Morocco to Pakistan, produces less economically than the Finnish company Nokia (Nokia has less than 8,000 employees). He said, there have been 10,000 books ever translated into Arabic. If you think about that in terms of how many rows of book stacks that would be at a bookstore, it is shocking (I calculate that to be a few stacks of books !). One single Borders in the U.S. thus contains far more books than have ever been translated by Arabic translators (Spain alone translates about 10,000 books a year). Thus, most Arabs are, for our standards, incredibly lacking in resources, to understand our world. Not only that, but their countries censor books and all media. Freedom to assemble basically does not exist in the Arab world, and thus, basic freedoms are lacking.

– There is "gender apartheid" in [most of] the Arab world (particularly Saudi Arabia). Women are mostly not seen in public in Saudi Arabia. Men know very little about women as a result (how to meet them ?). It is pathetic, how little young men know about women.

I bought several Dover Coloring books for my 8 year old son, along with a package of colored pencils. He already draws such detailed pictures of trains and I thought he would appreciate these books…..they did not disappoint.

The coloring books are definitely geared towards older children and are art quality…the kind of drawings I would imagine accompany the design board for a new car or product. My son is probably on the lower end of the age scale because the drawings are very detailed and require a little more advanced dexterity than your average coloring book, but he has already finished one picture and hung it on his wall…and that was the whole point for buying these.

I also appreciate the descriptions that appear with the pictures…he and I are learning together about the trains and cars that are featured in the books. If you have a child or young adult who is into cars or trains and also enjoy art I highly recommend these books.

Luxury cars is a coloring book that will be appreciate by older children. The book has a realistic drawing of a care and below the picture there is a written story about the hisotry of the car. The sotry is not a six sentence story, though some are. Some run about 2 to 3 short paragraphs or one large one. The text is small and the words are not dribble.

I purchased several Dover coloring books by Bruce LaFontaine for my adult son and he enjoys coloring these classy cars.
I also print his favorite cars so that he can color them several times. I have shopped around and can only find coloring
books for children. I was happy to find the Dover coloring books suitable for adults.
